What to Do With the Rings in a Divorce

|

Are you getting a divorce and wondering what you're supposed to do with the rings now that you're splitting? This question enters the minds of almost every man and woman who get divorced, and there isn't a "one size fits all" answer to the question.

For many, the emotional response to this question is a lot like changing their status from "married" to "single" on Facebook. Do you wear the ring until the divorce is finalized? Or, are you anxious to bear the naked finger and celebrate the next chapter of your life?

Some say that it's proper divorce etiquette to wear the ring until the divorce is official. The world has watched as Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner have worn their rings since announcing their split. But just because Ben and Jen are doing it, it doesn't mean that you have to follow suit.

To wear or not to wear the ring while your divorce is pending is a very personal decision and one that only you can make.

Giving a New Meaning to the Wedding Ring

Thoughts of your marriage may bring up emotions of anger, guilt, loss or even pure elation. Whatever negative emotions you may have, it doesn't mean that you should toss your wedding ring into the ocean or into the nearest trash.

Regardless of how a marriage ends or the reasons why, wedding rings have a sentimentality to them. If you're looking for ways to repurpose your engagement and wedding rings, here are some traditional methods:

  • One of the oldest traditions is to bring the ring to a jeweler and have it redesigned. You can wear the finished product on a chain, or on a different finger to signify suitors that you're available.
  • Often, people with children save the rings so they can give them to their sons or daughters as keepsakes.
  • If you think it noble, you can always return the ring to your ex.

Trading Memories for Cash

After the divorce, you may not be emotionally attached to the ring, or you may be concerned that a new sweetheart wouldn't want to be reminded of it. If either applies to you, or if you find yourself in need of cash, you can always sell the wedding ring.

If you decide to sell it, be sure to get an appraisal first. Then, all you have to do is choose if you want to sell it on eBay, eBid, or through the newspaper, Craigslist, or to a friend.

No matter how you feel about your marriage and your ex, be sure to give your ring some thought before you do something that you'll regret. As the pain of divorce heals, you don't want to feel remorse because you gave the ring to a complete stranger or sold it for $1.00 at your moving sale.
